Summer beckons and with it comes the promise of special occasion dressing; wedding celebrations, outdoor events, garden parties, summer balls and perhaps a trip to the races. Top of our list this year is a visit to Royal Ascot. Tuesday 18th – Saturday 22nd June are the dates for summer 2019. Ascot is famous not only for the races, but also its royal patronage and the fabulous array of fashion finery and millinery creations on show. The Royal Procession takes place at 2pm sharp each day and the Queen is a hugely keen participant. Six world class races follow during the afternoon. Ascot takes ‘a day at the races’ to another level. But what is the dress code at Royal Ascot? There are four enclosures, and dress codes apply to each.

The Royal Enclosure Dress Code

The Royal Enclosure (founded in 1807) is the historic heart of Royal Ascot and to this day remains the centrepiece of the British social season. It is the place to be seen and is synonymous with sartorial elegance. Although entry can be purchased with a guest badge, membership is by invitation only. A special outfit is of course essential as a strictly formal dress code applies. Hats or headpieces are required, fascinators are not allowed. Top hat and tails for the men!

The Queen Anne Enclosure Dress Code

In the Queen Anne Enclosure ladies are requested to dress ‘in a manner befitting a formal occasion’ and a hat, headpiece or fascinator must be worn at all times. Strapless and sheer dresses are not allowed, trouser suits must be full length and jumpsuits must fall below the knee. Gentlemen must wear a matching full length suit and tie – cravats and bow ties are not allowed.

The Village Enclosure Dress Code

Whilst the same rules apply for ladies in The Village Enclosure, men are allowed to wear cravats and bow ties if they so wish.

The Windsor Enclosure Dress Code

Things are a whole lot more relaxed in the Windsor Enclosure and whilst there is no official dress code, ladies and gentlemen are strongly encouraged to dress in smart daywear. Really though, who wouldn’t want to dress up for such an august occasion? Ladies are recommended to wear smart attire with a hat or fascinator and men should wear a jacket and tie (with long trousers!).

But back to our original question, what do you wear for Ascot? If you’re struggling for inspiration, this is where Lily Ella comes in… we have some lovely outfits perfect for the occasion and we’re sharing them with you.

To view the dress code in detail, head to the official Royal Ascot site.

We recommend the following Lily Ella outfits for your day at Ascot, or for a day at the races anywhere else this summer….

The Elegant Look

For an incredibly elegant look our Ethel Dress and Shrug are perfect, whichever enclosure you are headed for. Offering a flattering A-line silhouette with pretty flared godets around the hem, the dress has pink, aqua and white feather tracery on the softest lilac background. The fabric has a touch of stretch to ensure you stay comfortable all day long. The complementary bolero style shrug completes the refined look. Team the Ethel Dress and Shrug with a pastel hat or fascinator, pale shoes and clutch and you are ready for the races!

The Figure Enhancing Look

The Lisa Dress has superb fit and flare shaping with figure enhancing princess seams front and back and will keep you looking stylish all day long. With its on trend lace outer shell, ¾ sleeves and flattering V-neck, this lilac beauty will make you a winner, even if your bets don’t!

The Quirky Look

We know a lot of our customers look to Lily Ella for something a little out of the ordinary and on the relaxed, quirky side of formal. So for you ladies we suggest the Jandy Jacket, Top and Skirt. Beautifully fluid, and effortlessly feminine, this is one of our best-selling outfits. Crafted in flowing, flattering viscose and embellished with appliqué braiding, the feel is relaxed but the look will take you all the way to the winning post.

The Chic Look

Last but not least, Lily Ella’s Bridget Top and Skirt would look fantastic in the Windsor Enclosure. Made from our ever popular stretch viscose, the cut and feel of these pieces is superb. The beautiful, crisp, all over floral print elevates deceptively simple styling to another level. This outfit will take you anywhere, and Ascot is no exception.
